Starting Spring 2020, all UMBC professors will be required to include a section regarding exercise and stress reduction on their syllabi. This section will be placed below the Academic Dishonesty and Title IX policies. It will be written as follows:
“By enrolling in this class, each student is required by UMBC policy to be informed of the benefits of exercise on high stress levels. The average adult requires 75 minutes of intense activity and 150 minutes of moderate activity per week. UMBC offers several opportunities for students to be physically active including a twice-a-semester Health Fair and Health App free of cost for students and faculty. UMBC researchers recommend students increase their physical activity levels to meet the American Heart Association guidelines for improving both their physical and mental health.”
Upon reviewing their syllabus with classes, professors will encourage students to attend the UMBC Health Fair and utilize the Health App. While many students tend to overlook these parts of the syllabus, it is UMBC’s responsibility to inform students of how they can make healthier choices as well as the positive impacts of those choices.
